Spend Analytics

Understand market spend performance by industry, over time and across places.

Spend Analytics provides a market-level view of consumer spending, combining time-based and spatial analysis into a single, connected experience.

It helps users understand how spend is performing in a market, for a selected industry, over time and across places.

What Spend Analytics Shows

Spend Analytics is available within Market Analysis and is built around three connected components:

  • An industry selector
  • A time series graph showing spend over time
  • A map view coloured by spend performance

All three components stay in sync so users can analyse the same spend context from multiple perspectives.

Industry Selection

The Industry dropdown controls which slice of spend data is shown across the entire Spend Analytics experience.

The default industry is Total Retail. Only industries with available data are shown.

When the user changes the selected industry:

  • The time series graph reloads with spend data for that industry
  • The map recolours using spend performance for the same industry

The selected industry persists for the session until changed.

Market Spend Time Series

The Market Spend graph shows how spend performance changes over time for the selected market and industry.

Depending on the selected metric, the graph can display measures such as sales or transaction volumes, as well as growth versus a comparison period.

The graph supports the standard analytics controls:

  • Date range
  • Comparison period (for example, compared to the previous year)
  • Time aggregation (day, week, month, quarter)
  • Industry

Any change to these controls immediately updates the graph. Data freshness and metric definitions are available through tooltips and indicators.

Market Spend Map

The Market Spend map provides a spatial view of spend performance, allowing users to visually compare markets.

In Map View, users can select Spend as the dataset and then choose a spend metric, such as:

  • Sales index
  • Sales growth
  • Transactions index
  • Transactions growth

When a metric is loaded:

  • Market boundaries are coloured based on the selected spend metric
  • Index metrics use a continuous colour scale from low to high
  • Growth metrics use a diverging colour scale centred on zero

The legend updates to reflect the active metric and colour scale. Hovering over a market shows the market name and metric value.

How the Views Work Together

Spend Analytics is designed as a single, connected experience.

  • The industry selector defines the spend context
  • The time series graph shows how spend is changing over time
  • The map view shows how spend compares across markets

Changing the industry, date range, or comparison updates both the graph and the map, keeping the analysis consistent.

Why This Matters

Spend Analytics helps teams understand real economic demand.

  • Identify markets with strengthening or weakening spend
  • Compare spend performance across geographies
  • Analyse trends within specific retail industries
  • Put other signals, such as visits or trips, into financial context

This makes Spend Analytics a key input for market evaluation, planning, and performance analysis.
