Segments

See how audience segments help refine analysis and focus on key groups.

Segments

The Segments feature in Almanac lets you create and store groups of locations that share common traits. These Segments can then be applied across the platform — in Dashboards, Brand, and Location pages — allowing you to view localized or customized performance trends.

By default, every user has state-level Segments created automatically for their brand. These can be accessed directly from the Segment Menu, where you can browse, search, and apply them to any view. When applied, Segments act as a filtering layer, updating all visualizations, time series, and tables to show only data from the selected subset of locations.

How It Works

Default Segments

Each brand automatically includes state-level Segments, enabling quick regional analysis without setup.

  • Browse or search for a Segment by name (e.g., “New York,” “Illinois,” etc.)
  • Apply it directly to view metrics specific to that region
  • Use the “Show only applicable” toggle to hide Segments that don’t contain any locations for your brand

Tip: If a state doesn’t appear, it’s likely because “Show only applicable” is turned on, meaning there are no active locations in that region.

Creating Custom Segments

Custom Segments allow you to define your own groups of locations based on specific criteria — such as cities, regions, or store sets.

  1. Click Create in the Segment Menu.
  2. Use the checkboxes to select the desired locations.
    • Select individual sites or use the header checkbox to select all visible entries.
    • Combine this with filters (city, ZIP, state, etc.) to make bulk selections easily.
  3. Enter a Segment Name to make it easy to recognize later.
  4. Click Apply to save and activate the Segment.

Once applied, your selected Segment filters all corresponding data — from charts to tables — giving you a focused view of that subset of locations.

Create segment NY state

Tips & Tricks

  • Use state-level Segments for quick geographic filtering.
  • Create custom Segments to group specific markets, chains, or test regions.
  • The Segment Menu is available throughout the platform, so applied Segments persist across Dashboards and Analysis pages.
  • Combine Segments with Benchmarks to add competitive context to your filtered view.
  • When using Smart Benchmarks, note that Segments constrain the analysis area — but Smart Benchmarks may still reference nearby competitor locations outside the Segment boundary if they are within your defined proximity range.

Use Case

Segments are ideal for exploring localized performance.

For example, a user could apply a “New York” Segment to view how all stores in that state compare to their competitive benchmarks or to national averages.

By creating reusable, flexible Segments, you can analyze performance from any regional or brand-specific lens — helping uncover localized strengths, challenges, and opportunities.
